    The lute-harpsichord is distinguished from the regular harpsichord in the first place because of the stringing. Where harpsichords use metal strings (brass or iron), the lute-harpsichord is strung in gut, at least the strings at standard (8-foot) pitch. Not a single lute-harpsichord has survived as such to our time, hence we are dependent on written descriptions to tell us how contemporary builders addressed the design issues.     The lute-harpsichord is distinguished from the regular harpsichord in the first place because of the stringing. Where harpsichords use metal strings (brass or iron), the lute-harpsichord is strung in gut, at least the strings at standard (8-foot) pitch. Not a single lute-harpsichord has survived as such to our time, hence we are dependent on written descriptions to tell us how contemporary builders addressed the design issues. It is remarking that most of what we know about lute-harpsichords in mid-18th-century Germany emanates from the circle of J.S. Bach.
