Stefan Johannes Morent, direction
"Insula felix – augia felix", fortunate island - fruitful island. So sang the ninth century Benedictine monk and poet Walahfried Strabo in one of his most famous poems about his beloved island monastery. And the Reichenau was truly a stronghold of science and art in the Middle Ages, a cradle of European culture and one of the most important spiritual centres north of the Alps. Here flourished chant, poetry and illumination. After its decline, the manuscript treasures, which had in
the past been guarded by the famous monastery librarian Reginbert, were scattered to the four winds.
So it has been recent research which has approximately reconstructed the musical culture of the island monastery for the first time. The vocal Ensemble Ordo virtutum, directed by the musicologist and medieval specialist Stefan Morent, presents for the first time a programme of music which comes solely from the Reichenau monastery or is closely connected with it.
